Resident Story: The Right Home For Their Support Needs

Despite having daily supports in place, Michael was living in an environment that wasn’t designed for his needs. The layout and setup of the home created ongoing challenges for his safety, independence, and overall wellbeing.

To manage risks, certain areas of the home needed to be locked, limiting Michael’s access within his own space. The environment often felt restrictive and, at times, overwhelming which led to episodes of behaviour each day that required staff intervention. It became clear that Michael needed more than just support, he needed a home designed specifically for him.

Finding a More Suitable Home

Michael’s Support Coordinator reached out to SDA Living Australia to explore more suitable housing options, ideally close to his family and where he could bring his existing support networks.

After meeting with Michael’s mother and walking through one of our nearby homes, it was clear this environment offered something different.

A Home Designed Around His Needs

The home was designed for High Physical Support, with open spaces and accessible layouts that allowed Michael to move around safely and comfortably. Just as importantly, it gave him greater freedom within his own home, along with the opportunity to customise the space to suit his needs and preferences.

A Meaningful Change

Since moving in with his support team, Michael’s life has changed significantly. He is now living closer to his family and community, helping him feel more connected and supported. His home has been personalised to reflect his routines and lifestyle, creating a space that feels safe, familiar, and truly his own.

The Impact of the Right Home

The impact has been profound. Episodes of behaviour have reduced from several each day to just one or two per week, a significant shift that has improved not only Michael’s wellbeing, but also the daily lives of those around him.

Michael’s story is a powerful reminder that the right home, combined with the right support, can create meaningful and lasting change.
