Resident Story: Finding Home Again with Appendix H

At 55, Joanne’s life took an unexpected turn when illness led to the loss of a limb, changing the way she moved through the world. Suddenly reliant on a wheelchair, everyday tasks that were once simple became increasingly difficult, especially in a home that was never designed to support her needs. Narrow doorways, tight spaces, and limited accessibility soon meant she could no longer move safely around her home, and staying there became impossible.
Searching for Stability
Joanne and her partner entered a period of uncertainty and had to leave the home she once loved and raised her family in, moving from one hotel room to another. Each week brought instability, and while the rooms were accessible, they lacked the essentials of home. Without a kitchen or space to live independently, daily routines were disrupted and the life she once knew felt out of reach.
What Joanne needed wasn’t just accommodation, but a home that could support her while allowing her to keep her family together.
A Home Designed for Accessiblity
That opportunity came when she was introduced to SDA Living Australia. Through Appendix H funding, Joanne and her partner were able to move into a purpose-built SDA home designed for accessibility, safety, and long-term living.
From the moment she moved in to her new home, everything shifted. For the first time in months, Joanne could move freely and confidently throughout her home, with a space supporting her independence and restoring dignity to her everyday life. With stability came renewed purpose, and Joanne began reconnecting with her passion for hairdressing, something she had long put on hold, and slowly rebuilding a sense of joy and direction.
Rebuilding Independence
Today, Joanne and her partner are settled in a home that meets their needs, supports their future, and most importantly, keeps them together. Joanne’s journey is a reminder that the right home doesn’t just provide accessibility, it restores independence, confidence, and the ability to stay connected to the people who matter most.
Joanne’s story highlights the important role Appendix H funding can play in helping participants access suitable housing while remaining close to the people who matter most.
